Overview:The Parthian Fortresses of Nisa is located near the modern Bagir village, 18 km southwest of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It is an ancient site consists of two tells, Old Nisa and New Nisa, indicating from the mid 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD.
The Parthian Fortresses of Nisa is located near the modern Bagir village, 18 km southwest of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It is an ancient site consists of two tells, Old Nisa and New Nisa, indicating from the mid 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD.
Excavations at two parts of Nisa have revealed richly decorated architecture, illustrative of domestic, mausoleums and shrines, many inscribed documents and looted treasury. Many Hellenistic art works have been uncovered, as well as a large number of ivory rhytons, the outer rims (coins) decorated with Iranian subjects or classical mythological scenes.
